The Steering Committee is responsible for the day-to-day operation of GEO. They generally meet twice a month while classes are in session and hold more meetings as needed. Voting members include the GEO co-chairs and mobilization coordinator, as well as two representatives elected by the Stewards’ Assembly and two representatives elected by the general membership (the at-large representatives). The Grievance Coordinator and Membership Organizer are ex officio, non-voting members of the Steering Committee, as are all GEO stewards.

GEO’s Assembly of Stewards aims to create and develop shop floor activism across departments at UMass Amherst and to organize and mobilize rank-and-file participation in GEO. Stewards are responsible for communication between the leadership and the membership. The assembly aims to get stewards involved in decision-making regarding union policy, contract administration, negotiations, and other workplace issues. The co-chairs of the assembly bring the stewards together to share information, learn from one another, and support each other.

The Joint Council of UAW Local 2322 is the highest decision-making body in our amalgamated union besides the general membership. The body meets monthly and conducts union business outside of and between our yearly Local-wide membership meetings. GEO’s co-chairs are de facto representatives to the Joint Council for GEO; we also receive a number of other seats determined by the size of our unit.
